Thank Goodness For Those Low Sodium Fish and Chips.

When your Door Dash driver arrives, it turns out that he may be bringing an unexpected (and unwelcome) ride-along: salt. That’s according to researchers at the University of Reading in the UK. In a new study, the researchers assessed the level of sodium in takeout meals around Reading, to compare actual readings with menu labels and with recommended levels of sodium consumption.
They found that takeout meals regularly contained more salt than diners are led to believe. In some cases, a single meal provided well over the recommended daily limit, even though menu labels suggested otherwise. Almost half of the dishes tested contained more salt than indicated on the menus, with curries, pasta, and pizzas being among the lead offenders. Some of the meals clocked in at 10 grams of sodium, compared to the recommended daily allowance of 6 grams in the UK (recommended daily allowance is slightly lower in the US). Curiously, fish and chips tested the best, with an average of .2 grams of salt per serving.
Of course, not many of you are dining tonight in Reading, so take this with a grain of salt (see what we did there). But we suspect that Reading is not unique in this regard and suggest caution when it comes to dining out and sodium consumption.
